Jolene's Jottings

June is a month filled with celebrations and graduations probably top the list. As we celebrate with our graduates this weekend, we wish them well in life’s next steps.  Graduation is the completion of a phase of our life but really a stepping stone to the next or new phase of our life.

For those completing eighth grade, high school looms ahead. It means the challenge of a new school, new friends and lots of new and challenging classes and opportunities to work toward future success … or failure.

For those completing high school, most often it means you are soon off to college. That for many means moving away from the comfort and security of home, being on your own for the first time in your life. There are still rules and people making demands on you but how you respond to that often means success or failure for your future.

And for those graduating from college it means seeking a job or off to the beginning of a career, often the first of several that you may pursue. With the constant change in society today, we often find ourselves unhappy with our work or simply out of work because the demand for that career no longer exists.

So what does all of this tell us? The daily challenges of life will always be there and we can meet them with the grace of God and the guidance of those around us that we have learned to trust. Prayer and a deep dependence on God are essential. God gives us everything we need. The problem is that too often we forget to look to God, we turn away from the guidance God sends our way or we just fail to see or hear or notice. We do not see or hear or recognize the signs God sends because we are too busy struggling for success, for the extra money, or just plain worrying about what to do to take time to pray, and listen and see.

The older I get the more amazed I am at the unique ways God works in our lives all the time. He is constantly giving us gifts, putting people in our lives to guide or help us. Rarely a day goes by without at least one special thing happening that has God’s hand written all over it. One of the most amazing is the way God is taking care of the future of the 4-H Center.

When we decided to sell it a couple of years ago the first deals fell through. One of them happened a few days before Father’s 50th jubilee. I was working outside with the new owner, Terry Payne from Payne’s Landscaping, who was here helping to get the grass cut and the holes in the yard filled when I got the call that the deal fell through. When he learned we were selling it he decided to buy it. He credits his years there under Mr. Mills as the reason he is a successful business man. And more amazing is the way he found the lady, who is the person now, in charge of the renovations of the center.  They were at a class reunion of Kettering High School and she wanted to get classmates to help her do something with the Kettering building. When Terry heard her idea he invited her to join him in reviving the 4-H Center. When she heard his ideas she jumped on board. Both Terry and Nakita’s goals in life are to make this community a better place to live and raise families. God sent both of them to us in unique ways.
