Message From The Nativity Evangelization Team - Church Library Update
We hope our Nativity family has enjoyed the convenience of a parish library.  Its purpose is to provide a means for us to share reading material that teach and inspire us to grow in all areas of life.  You may have noticed the addition of the “Care Notes” displays which were recently updated to include booklets on practical topics such as stress management, single parenting, strengthening a struggling marriage, and handing on your faith to your family.  If you haven’t used the library recently or in the past, please take a few moments before or after Mass to visit in back of church.

Another change is you are no longer required to check books out.  Books added to the library will not have the card & pocket in the back cover.  When you return books, please put them in the bin designated for returns and not back on the shelf.  We will reshelf to ensure items remain under the labelled category.  Thank you for the many donations made to the library.  They are always welcomed and can be placed in the designated bin in the back of church.

Donate Books/Magazines – (new or slightly used).  Material appropriate for all ages is desired:  toddlers, grades K-8, teens, young adults and beyond.  Reading material should inspire and promote Christian learning and values.  Suggested topics are:  children’s biblical stories, teen and youth books that build Christian values and character, books on marriage and relationships, living single, forgiveness, loss & grief, spiritual & prayer life, meditation books, physical health & nutrition, parenting skills, coping with chronic or terminal illness, stewardship & financial planning, biblical commentaries & study aides, books on the Holy Spirit, the saints, and biographies & autobiographies of individuals whose lives inspire.  Large print and audio books will be useful.  You are not limited to these suggestions as long as it material promotes Christian learning and values.  Thank you for your continued support and enjoy!

DETROIT CATHOLIC PASTORAL ALLIANCE
Are you a member of the Detroit Catholic Pastoral Alliance yet? From the start, the Alliance and Nativity have been strong partners. You may know that the Alliance saw its early beginnings as a group of priests, including Fr. Singer, who came together on Tuesday mornings to pray, share reflections on the next Sunday’s readings, and discuss the concerns of their city churches. They grew to include some religious women and pastoral associates.

In 1988 when many parishes were hit with the threat of closing, the group coalesced and mushroomed into a militant body that added numerous lay people and vigorously fought against the destruction of parish communities.  Nativity was there in that fight. As an officer of the Alliance, Sr. Jolene was a key spokesperson to the media. While many of the threatened parishes were closed many were saved. From those early efforts the Alliance evolved into what it is today, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) tax -exempt organization made up of parishes and individuals dedicated to maintaining an effective Catholic presence in the metro Detroit area.

Over the years the Alliance has instituted numerous programs, too many to list here.  Many of our people have been active participants. Practically all of our current Ministers of Service are graduates of the Ministers training program.  Quite a few of us attended the anti-racism workshops, several of our members tutor at Epiphany Education Project and some of our seniors have enjoyed the very reasonably priced excursions and overnight trips. Others have been key players in the planning of the ministers’ retreats and the annual Harvest Dinner.

Nativity particularly benefited when the Alliance moved its headquarters into our neighborhood in 1994 made possible by Tom & Sharon Mudloffs’ donation of their parents’ store. That began the housing and commercial development and neighborhood beautification in our area. We have always been a strong member parish and supporter, following in the examples of Sr. Jolene and Fr. Singer who from the beginning were committed and active in the leadership.

The members’ annual dues payments are a significant contribution to the Alliance budget. You can join for as little as five dollars per year or at a greater amount, whatever your finances can comfortably support. Won’t you consider joining today? The forms are available at the entrances.  If you have any questions please see Chris McLaughlin, the current board chairperson, or myself, Miriam Moses, your other parish board representative. Then as a member when you talk about the Alliance you proudly will be able to say, “This is the work we do.”
