Christ is Risen
Alleluia!
Happy Easter to all! Today we celebrate NEW LIFE! In midst of the struggles in our world, we can become overwhelmed by the darkness! Today is the day that we remember the end of the story! The end of the story is about life over death, hope over despair, generosity over greed, justice over injustice and peace over violence. All of this would be wishful thinking if we didn’t believe in the Resurrection of Christ. The Resurrection changes everything! We can never look at any situation as hopeless because the Resurrection reminds us that grace is everywhere. May we hold close to this Easter truth and allow ourselves to bring that light to all the world.

At Nativity, we see new life in many ways but at the Easter Vigil we will see new life in welcoming Kentrell to the waters of baptism. Kentrell Jr is the son of Kentrell and, grandson of Adrian and Barbara. He has made the decision that his year he wishes to be baptized and we are overjoyed! Kentrell, we thank you for choosing this community of Nativity to be baptized and know that you have our prayers and support as you begin your journey with Christ.

May this Easter be for all of us a moment of hope reminding us that Christ who is Risen makes all things new!

The Lord’s Passion
Palm Sunday with the Lord’s Passion is about the following contrast: Kingship of splendor/fame versus a Kingship of service to others. As the procession with Palms which precedes the Mass, we hear a first Gospel reading that states the premise. It tells us about Jesus’ triumphal entrance into Jerusalem. He chooses a donkey to ride on, carrying out the words of Zechariah 9:9 “Behold, your King comes to you , meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burdens.”

The sign of a King was his humility, and therefore in Israel the customary mount for a king in procession was donkey. Jesus rode as a King. People cheered wildly and they layered palm branches on the roadway, even spreading out their own coats upon it. His foot must not touch the common roadway. He is their man. He is their King! Palm Sunday draws us into Holy Week, which some people observe as a week-long retreat. If you were able to attend our Lenten program “Praying with the Heat of Jesus,” the hopefully you have created Sacred Space in your homes. If you were unable to attend then I would like to encourage everyone to create a meditative tone in your homes, with a red cloth, palm branches, Bible, crucifix and a battery operated candle if you have young children. Prepare your “Alleluia Banner,” for East Sunday to hang on your door or place in your front window to announce to your community that Jesus is the light of the world.

Most importantly, plan to participate in the holiest liturgies of the year: the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday evening, the Celebration of our Lord’s Passion on Friday afternoon (pray for our young children as the will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation), and the East Vigil on Saturday evening, (pray for our young teen Kentrell Gabriel as he will receive the Sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist).

In 2013 we granted the first 4 scholarships to college students who were members of Nativity under provisions of the Changing Lives Together program. This year would have been the last year of granting scholarships under that program. However, due to past generous donations, and the prudent investment of Father Singer, funds became available for continued scholarship activity. Funds have been invested so that an annual scholarship program should be available on a continuing basis.

There have been changes to the scope and process. To begin with there are now three categories: Higher Education, Secondary Parochial Education, and Primary Parochial Education. The proposed changes have been reviewed and approved by the Parish Council. All three categories are limited to active members of Nativity. The applications are to be received not later than June 1st to be considered. Awards will be chosen from qualified applicants in the order they are received.

Applications are color coded with the application on the front and guidelines on the back. Forms will be available in the back of church during March, April, and May. The application forms for Higher Education are yellow. The application forms for Parochial Secondary Education are green. The application forms for Parochial Primary Education are blue. If someone wants to have an electronic version of the form, they can email a request to [email protected], and I will send them one.
Donations to the Father Singer Nativity Scholarship fund are welcome and can be mailed to the church office, indicating their intention.

Scholarship team members are Fran Carnaghi, Richard Kelly, Chris McLaughlin, Miriam Moses, and Harry Wimble. Questions about the scholarship program can be directed to any scholarship team member.

And again remember, all applications must be received by June 1st to be considered.
